The public is invited to the launch of “Hear in the Gorge”, a new series of radio-documentary styled podcasts that delve into and reveal stories unique to the Gorge. No matter who or where you are in the Columbia River Gorge, a sense of its rich cultural and natural history is inescapable–especially as you learn more about the region. Join us for the Launch and Listen Party at the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center in the Dalles on Wednesday, May 17th, 6-8 pm, where you can hear outtakes from interviews that capture the history and spirit of the Gorge, download the first podcast, and subscribe to the series.
Delve into the experience of the region’s Japanese American residents during World War II; the Crag Rats – oldest mountain rescue team in the country; tribal village life at in-lieu sites along the Columbia River; and Woodie Guthrie’s month-long Columbia River songwriting experience for the BPA. These podcasts highlight archival audio, as well as storytelling from locals and experts, creating gripping and moving nonfiction narratives about the Columbia River Gorge and its heritage. Hear in the Gorge is an audio companion to the acclaimed Gorge Owned (GO!) Sense of Place lecture series.
Don’t miss this opportunity to listen and learn about some of the seminal, yet under-recognized stories from the Gorge’s storied history. join your neighbors for light appetizers and a no-host bar while you listen to a preview of what’s to come this summer, and subscribe to the new podcasts that will be released in May, June, September and November!
Hear in the Gorge is made possible by a grant from Travel Oregon and sponsorship support from Portland Spirit Cruises and Events, Mt Adams Chamber of Commerce, Maryhill Museum of Art, Columbia Gorge Discovery Center, Wet Planet Rafting & Kayaking, Bridgeside and Riverside Restaurants, The Griffin House, and Griffith Motors. It could not have happened without the talent and energy of Sarah Fox, Lloyd DeKay, and the dedicated team of Columbia Gorge Arts and Culture Alliance.
